Fairy lights all twinkle differently
December 2011<div style="text-align:justify">It is far too facile to measure business success only in bottom line results, overlooking the many, and often subtle, variants that determine our business footprint. People do business with people. Companies are merely a frame around that interaction. The many, varied, but always generous, contributions to our efforts by you, our network, continue to overwhelm us. Thank you. 2011 was not without its challenges and we have valued the support, confidence and energy of the many people we have done “business” with this year. For us 2012 will be about continuing to build our network through reciprocity, accessibility and proactivity.</div>

In a recent study of social media usage, organisations have been embracing this technology to connect with customers; 86% are on Facebook, 78% on LinkedIn, 62% on Twitter and 17% participate in some form with a social world. In an article by Sharon Williams published in the Australian Institute of Company Director’s Company Director, there was also the contention that social media can affect the share price of a company. It is certainly connecting us to more opportunities but for many organisations it is also presenting challenges.
Twenty years ago, personal or private telephone calls at work were considered disruptive. Then along came the internet and emails and, as a consequence, a whole new series of workplace policies. Today’s explosion of social media use has created yet another headache for employers....

Paul Howard | Managing Director | Howard Recruitment

Today, the subject of behavioural decision-making is one of the more exciting areas in diverse fields including economics, finance, and medicine. Decision making can be regarded as a cognitive process, resulting in the selection of a course of action among several alternatives. It is a vital skill for personal life and business decisions. Problem-solving often involves decision-making, especially important for managers and leaders.
In recognition of the impact of his work in economics, Daniel Kahneman, a cognitive psychologist and professor emeritus at Princeton, won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002. In the highly anticipatedThinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman takes us on a ground breaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think....
Simplifying Santa Land
The Editor | Management Trends |
You have to wonder how Santa copes these days. Looking at the Christmas list of your average ten year old gives you an understanding of just how complex Santa’s business has become. Santa is not alone in this conundrum. While globalisation and technology have opened up new markets and enabled new competitors, customers have more options and have become harder to please and more fickle. Competitive advantage has become an elusive nirvana as what works today won’t work tomorrow.
Recent research undertaken by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) indicates that companies today (on average) set themselves six times as many performance requirements as they did in 1955....

Alison Dear | Health Interactive | Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach
According to a UK study – The Food and Mood Project – food can have a considerable impact on our mood. Eighty percent of the people surveyed for the study reported significant improvement in mood swings, depression and anxiety when their eating style was based on ‘supporter foods’ like vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, wholegrain foods, oily fish and water....
