Beware the age-old stereotype
The Australian Financial Review - Catherine Fox Date: 14/12/2004Researchers say it is simplistic to talk about the ageing workforce as if it were a homogenous thing. Catherine Fox reports.
Listening to all the rhetoric about the ageing workforce could give the impression that every job sector is about to be hit by a virtual tsunami of retirements followed by severe shortages of labour.
But alarmist reports on the drying up of the workforce over the next 10 years often fail to take into account the enormous variations in age profiles of certain occupations and the need to understand how to retain different groups of older workers.
The impact of the demographic shift is often addressed as a generic problem. But Mark Cole, senior researcher with workplace research institute Acirrt, told a crowded seminar on the topic last month that it is increasingly difficult to know what is meant by the ageing workforce.

But in return for the short-term ``forced savings" of the share plan, he or she would have to wear a $77,000 drop in immediate after-tax salary. RPC's Ted Kowalski comments: ``Don't forget that often executives are also getting bonuses and other incentives that make up for cashflow. Before a package is set up, though, they'd have to work out their cashflow..............
