It seems that wherever you look anti-aging clinics, health spas and cosmetic surgeries are springing up. Many of us are afraid to grow old, or to at least appear to be growing old. Staying vital as we age has a lot to do with good dietary practices and attitude.
Helpful foods for longevity
- Leafy green vegetables, barley and wheatgrass products which are packed with minerals to combat the effects of refined sugar
- Complex carbohydrates – wholegrains, fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds – fibre rich foods that keep the digestive tract working smoothly and clean the arteries
- Sprouts of any kind are good for breaking down fats proteins and starches to make them easier to digest
- Almonds, linseeds, fish, or flaxseed oil – these are high in essential fatty acids which are important for cognitive function, and protect the heart and joints
- Drink at least 2 litres of water daily to ensure cells are hydrated and to assist digestion/elimination of toxins. It will help you to think clearly, and even make your skin look less creased!
Foods to avoid:
- Acid forming foods – refined sugar products, coffee, excess alcohol, highly processed foods – as these prevent calcium absorption which is required for cardiovascular health, bone density and nervous system
- Excessive amounts of salt as this will increase blood pressure and inhibit mineral uptake from other foods
Supplements:
- Ginkgo biloba has been shown in clinical studies to increase blood flow and neural transmission in the brain. It may improve memory and reduce vertigo
- Calcium/magnesium together for cardiovascular, bone and nervous system health
- Spirulina, barley grass (vital greens) provide minerals and help our liver to eliminate toxins as they are packed with enzymes that aid digestion
- EFA – essential fatty acids (fish oil, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil are all good examples)
Lifestyle factors:
- Avoid over eating
- Do not eat late at night
